Sports (Hope Runs)

Problems

  • UNICEF reports that over 43 million children are out of school because of armed conflict, and over 250,000 have been recruited into armed forces.
  • Girls and women are particularly unlikely to engage in any athletic activity, and are often encouraged not to by authority figures.

Solution

  • IBECOME's flagship project is Hope Runs, an organization started by IBECOME founders that works to place running programs in orphanages. Sports programs serve not only as tools to promote health and fitness, but also as tools for peace and tolerance among individuals of all ages.
  • Hope Runs participants already report higher school performance, higher self-esteem, improved outlook for the future, and greater life satisfaction since participating in Hope Runs programming.
  • With two well-developed sites in Kenya, and over 100 participants, Hope Runs is now part of the IBECOME curriculum at all four of its orphanages in East Africa.

  • The Hope Runs 777 Challenge: In 2010, Hope Runs will be leading a Guinness World Record-breaking endeavor to complete 7 marathons on 7 continents in only 7 weeks. With a team of dedicated runners, physical therapists, and doctors, we are committed to breaking some fantastic Guinness World Records.

    The Hope Runs 777 Challenge will help bring the issues facing the 14.5 million AIDS orphans in Africa alone to the forefront of the world's consciousness. By pushing ourselves to the limit, our team will raise awareness for the issues facing orphaned and vulnerable children all over the world, mobilizing people everywhere to become more involved.
