Problem

  • Local community interactions and international partnerships with orphanages are severely limited. Orphanages, and the children who live in them, often suffer by not being fully accepted into their surrounding communities.

Solution

  • Local Involvement:
    • Hiring local staff: 100% of our in-country staff members are local individuals committed to their communities.
    • Building Community Infrastructure: The facilities we use for the orphanages can easily be expanded to help develop community infrastructure. Through resources such as the orphanage tailoring shop, computer access, and health clinics, there are extensive opportunities for community outreach and education.
  • Expanded International Involvement:
    • Volunteer Program: Since the donor base for many East African orphanages comes from overseas, creating strong connections between international volunteers and the communities we work in is essential to building up international network of support for each of our sites. We work at the same time to both expand upon this support and lessen the homes' financial reliance on such external groups.

We bring in committed volunteers for a minimum of 8 weeks. This stay enables them to create a project that can have a true impact on the site, while also giving the children a chance to connect with the volunteers in a meaningful way.

    • International Exchange Programs: Giving children the chance to experience life overseas is an excellent window into the world beyond the orphanage academy. This year, two of our students are entering their second year of an international exchange at a high school in the U.S.
